Peacocks are flamboyant but shy and as a peacock shelter, the Adichunchanagiri Peacock Sanctuary established as a sanctuary in 1981 in Karnataka’s Mandya district at Nagamangala Taluk.

Declared a Bird Sanctuary in 1940 at the behest of the famous ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers.

The sanctuary is spread over an area of 0.67 sq km and located on the banks of River Cauvery. This bird paradise is the preferred nesting ground for several species of resident birds.

Go boating on the river, get a fascinating view of the various species of birds, and can have a glimpse of the marsh crocodiles in the waters.


Around 170 different species of birds have been recorded from Ranganathittu. Most commonly seen birds have Painted Stork, Kingfishers, Cormorants, Darter, Herons, River Tern, Egrets, Indian Roller, Blackheaded Ibis, Spoonbill, Great Stone Plover, and Spot-billed Pelicans.

Located in Bonal village in Shorapur is the Bonal Lake and this is the second-largest bird sanctuary after Ranganthittu in Karnataka. The lake, surrounded by rocky hillocks, is believed to be built by Surpur King Raja Pam Naik in the 17th century, spread over 700 acres. The birds which frequent the sanctuary include Purple Heron, White-necked Stork, white ibis, Black-headed Ibis, Red-naped Ibis, Darter, Bar-headed Goose, Purple Moorhen, Indian Moorhen, Large Egret, Pond Heron, and Cattle Egret.

Ghataprabha Bird Sanctuary is one of the most-visited attractions in the region. It is enclosed by the mighty Ghataprabha River and emerged in over 22 Islands. This 29.78 Sq. Km region is home to more than 225 bird species from different parts of the country.

While European White Stock and the Demoiselle Crane are the most popular migratory Birds in the region, there are several Endemic Birds and Avifauna as well. Some of these include Peacock, Egrets, Lesser Pied, Snakebird, and Stocks as well. Besides this, the Sanctuary also has a variety of Snakes, Jackals, Mongoose, Hares, and other animal species.

Located about 70Kms from Belgaum, Ghataprabhą Bird Sanctuary attracts tourists throughout the year in large numbers. The region is surrounded by lush greenery and huge acres of agricultural lands, adding to its beauty and charm.
